The Campus Sexual Violence Advocate is here to provide and assist with the coordination of comprehensive case management and emergency response services to survivors of sexual and intimate partner violence as well as education and awareness programs for the Caltech community. The Campus Advocate works closely with the Equity and Title IX Office, as an external resource, to hold a confidential space to discuss issues surrounding intimate partner violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment and stalking. All services are free and confidential.
Through Peace Over Violence, the Campus Sexual Violence Advocate is trained to provide direct services to survivors which include crisis intervention, intake needs assessment, safety planning and on-going comprehensive case management. To ensure justice, protection and compassion for survivors of intimate partner violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment and stalking, our comprehensive case management services offer support and advocacy on behalf of survivors navigating personal, legal and criminal justice systems. Case management includes:
Advocacy and follow up with law enforcement, campus administrators, housing and others;
Help clients apply for restraining orders, prepare for court hearings, create safety plan and educate on victim rights;
Accompany survivors to hospitals with a Sexual Assault Response Team, police stations, court, and social services to provide crisis intervention, advocacy and support;
Schedule and conduct comprehensive needs and risk assessments, as well as an intake process for individual counseling and continuation of services in POV's case management, counseling and/or legal programs;
Identify client needs and assist in accessing services information and referrals
Well, first, the Campus Advocate would communicate either by phone or email to set up a face to face appointment. Given the circumstances of the pandemic, the Campus Advocate is still available by phone or if you prefer, by video chat through zoom. During your first conversation with her, she will go over her code of confidentiality and provide more information about the services offered. Then, you both would talk about why you reached out to her or discuss the reason you may have been referred; your conversations with the Campus Advocate are confidential. Depending on what you talk about, she can offer crisis intervention, grounding, mindfulness, empowerment, referrals or advocacy. If you are interested in receiving case management, counseling or legal services, then you both would fill out some forms to register you as a client with Peace Over Violence.
The Campus Advocate is here to listen and help you find options that are appropriate and specific to your needs. She can help answer any questions about the reporting process, on campus or with police, explain survivor rights and address any physical or emotional safety concerns you might be experiencing. She will create a case plan and set goals to make sure you are getting access to services you need.
